A reference architecture is an abstract solution for an architecture in a particular domain.

Main Description

Reference architectures provide basic concepts and their relationships for a particular domain. Such architectures capture domain knowledge and the most common elements that can be expected in applications in these domains.

Due to their abstract and generalised nature, reference architectures have to be tailored to fit a certain system. This can include omitting concepts or references as well as adding additional ones that are specific to the system.
